Video: ablation on anodised aluminium (1 MB)

Coated material can be marked after the top coating is ablated via the laser. Examples are: anodised aluminium, varnished material, day & night design or laser marking foils.

When ablating the top layer of coated (e.g. anodised layers) or varnished metals, the laser beam does not interact with the base material, but mainly with the coating layer.

Multi layered plastics can be marked after a thin top layer is ablated (varnished material or multi layered materials such as laser marking foil are usually best for laser marking).

The coatings should have the following characteristics:
  • high contrast between coating and base material
  • good absorption capacity for the used laser wavelength
  • homogeneous coating thickness
