Engraving

Video: engraving on plastics

Metals, ceramics and some plastics can be engraved with the laser. The density of the laser beam is so high that, during the process, within a few nano-seconds the material is partially vapourised. A colourless indentation is made on the workpiece - the engraving. Through the interaction of the melted base material with atmospheric oxygen, oxides are often formed, which because of their colour makes the engraving stand out more clearly.

Due to its beam profile, the laser beam dips into the material surface in a cone shape. At the edge of the focussed beam melting occurs which then solidifies part of the material (spraying and unwanted ejections). Type and size of the edge ejection depends on the material, the pulse performance and the engraving depth.
